Newcastle’s in-demand top scorer Salomón Rondón is still holding out for his dream permanent move to St James’ Park, according to the Daily Star.
Both West Ham and Wolves are reportedly confident of winning the race for the Venezuelan’s signature.
But his preference has always been to stay at Newcastle, which is why he is delaying his decision until Rafa Benitez’s future is known.
The 6ft 1in striker – likened by fans to legend Alan Shearer – knows that Rafa staying increases his chances of signing.
Not signing Rondón will be huge blow to fans
Should he go elsewhere, Geordie fans will be devastated, such is his popularity among them.
It is another indication that the managerial position needs to be clarified, with the club in stasis until an announcement is made.
But as keen as Rondón is to stay in the North East, is, he can only wait so long until a decision must be made.
As disappointed as fans will be if he does not sign, they will surely not blame the player. It is the owner and managing director who will take the bulk of the blame.
Mike Ashley’s policy of only wanting to sign young players is thought to be one of the sticking points in talks with Rafa.
The Spanish maestro believes that a mix of experience and youth is needed to build a successful squad. He is determined to receive written assurances that he can have the say on that before he commits his future.
Fans will be hoping he gets his way, and that both he and Rondón will be at St James’ Park in August.
