Newcastle United winger Ryan Fraser has praised the incredible character of Chris Wood, who is just as good on the pitch as he is off it.
The Scot spoke on Sky Sports’ YouTube channel and was asked about Wood, who arrived in January for £25million.
“He gives you so much off the pitch, he’s such a good lad,” Fraser said.
“I think that’s what the gaffer has done. He’s took the boys in that are very, very good players, but are also good guys off the pitch.
“That’s where the gaffer has got a good balance of getting good lads. Top, top players and just as good guys.”
The Ryan Fraser interview was an interesting insight for some Toon fans. He also was brutally honest about how poor he was last season.
Both Wood and Fraser have played their part in Newcastle’s great escape
Since his arrival in November, Fraser has reaped the benefits of Howe being the Magpies boss. From the interview you can tell how highly he rates him as a manager.
It’s no surprise that the Scotland international looks more energised and has now got a couple of league goals under his belt. He’s a million times better than he was under Steve Bruce, the man who brought him to St James’ Park.
As for Wood, he’s been the target man since signing in January. Often he’ll bring the ball down and hold up the play using his aerial ability, size and strength.
However, he’s struggled to consistently find the net for Newcastle. But his two goals against Southampton and Wolves were very important ones, where the Toon won both matches by just one goal.
It’s clear that the new arrivals on Tyneside last January have been a boost for the club. Not just on the pitch but off it too. Callum Wilson had mentioned previously he’s bonded more with some of the players over time. Clearly, the new boys fit in well with the current squad.
This has certainly been a factor in how Newcastle have surged away from the drop zone. Howe has instilled belief into his squad, also the character shown within the squad has been exceptional.
When they won against Burnely in December, no team had stayed up after winning their first game at that point in the season. It truly shows that the Toon is on the verge of something special in the future.
