Newcastle United have lured Ross Wilson from Nottingham Forest, and the Scot appears to be making a positive impact.
When PIF purchased Newcastle United, they probably didn’t envisage such upheaval in the sporting director role.
Dan Ashworth was plucked to take the job, but he departed for Manchester United in 2024.
Paul Mitchell came in as his successor, only to last less than a year before leaving St James’ Park.
It’s now Ross Wilson’s turn, after the Scot completed a long-awaited move from Nottingham Forest.

David Hopkinson stance on Newcastle United’s Ross Wilson
Wilson has become Newcastle’s latest sporting director after previously taking the reins at Rangers.
Eddie Howe is on board with Wilson’s appointment, and CEO David Hopkinson appears to feel similarly.
The Athletic report that Hopkinson has been in contact with Wilson ‘for an extended period’ ahead of working together at Newcastle.
Hopkinson feels that Wilson is the ‘ideal partner’ as they look to take Newcastle forward.
The pair already appear to have a strong working relationship, while Wilson has already enjoyed ‘positive’ discussions with Howe.
Wilson certainly seems to have made a strong first impression at Newcastle, and he will hopefully last longer in the job than his predecessors.
Ross Wilson synergy with David Hopkinson bodes well for the future
Newcastle need to be settled off the pitch, and the upheaval behind the scenes has been an unwelcome and unexpected factor in the PIF era.
Nobody expected Ashworth to leave for Manchester United, and few could have predicted Mitchell lasting less than a year.
Newcastle really need Wilson to stay put and build something for the future, so a strong connection with Hopkinson and Howe is a great start.
The summer transfer window was a difficult one for Newcastle as Mitchell departed with no replacement secured.
Newcastle looked a little chaotic in the transfer market at times, and while the signings of Malick Thiaw and Nick Woltemade worked out well, more stability off the pitch should bring more success going forward.
