Robin Gosens could now be replaced after rejecting Newcastle in January

Former Newcastle United target Robin Gosens could be replaced one year after rejecting a move to St James’ Park.

The Magpies were heavily linked with signing the Germany international back in January. He was one of multiple players rumoured to be heading to Tyneside, as the new owners looked to boost the club’s chances of avoiding relegation.

Full-back was identified as an area of weakness by Eddie Howe, both on the right and left. Kieran Trippier arrived on the right for £12million, but landing a left-sided defender wasn’t as easy.

There was talk of a move for Lucas Digne, but he went to Aston Villa instead. Then Gosens emerged as a target, and it sounded like a deal could happen.

PIF were reportedly prepared to quadruple the defender’s wages to join Newcastle. However, he decided to reject a move to the North East.

In an interview, Gosens said: “At the end of my career, I would like to look in the mirror and say: ‘I got the most from my sporting career.’ With Newcastle I didn’t have that feeling from the start.”

Instead, Newcastle brought in Matt Targett on loan. He did so well that his deal became permanent during the summer.

As for Gosens, he is an Inter Milan player, but isn’t having a good time at the San Siro.

Inter Milan could now replace Robin Gosens

The Serie A giants beat Newcastle to Gosens’ signature. They signed him on loan last January then made the deal permanent for £22million.

However, his time with I Nerazzurri could be coming to an end when the transfer window opens. Gosens has really struggled in the blue and black stripes, and Inter could be about to take action.

According to Tuttosport (relayed by Sempre Inter), Inter will look to sign a replacement left wing-back if Gosens doesn’t improve in the coming months. That means the pressure is on the 28-year-old to get better or risk losing his place in Simone Inzaghi’s side.

Gosens was pretty scathing about Newcastle’s bid to sign him, but his career hasn’t gone to plan since snubbing a move to the Premier League.

He could have been part of something special at St James’ Park, as the club look to climb the table and become a force in football. Gosens would have been immortalised as a Toon hero if he’d joined and played a key role in the Magpies’ rise.

But instead he joined Inter, which is fair enough given they were Serie A champions at the time. They are still a huge club, but the move simply isn’t working out for the man who could be wearing black and white instead.
