Newcaastle United appear to be heading towards safety – but Steve Bruce’s days in the hotseat could still be numbered.
That’s the view of Robbie Savage, who has penned a column for the Mirror about the Magpies under the 60-year-old.
The Toon have just recorded back-to-back victories in the Premier League and are now eight points clear of Fulham, with a game in hand on the Cottagers.
It looks as though Bruce is going to achieve what Mike Ashley wanted him to.
But Savage can still see a change in the offing, writing (via Shields Gazette): “Steve Bruce is a good man, a good manager, and I believe he will keep Newcastle United in the Premier League.
“But one way or another, I fear his days at St James’ Park are numbered and it might be best for all concerned if they part company this summer – because the atmosphere around the club has become too toxic.”
Savage goes on to state his concerns that a tough start to next season in terms of fixtures could lead to an ‘intolerable’ environment.
It needs to happen, but won’t
Bruce and Newcastle won’t part company in the summer.
It’s what the vast majority of fans want to see, but Mike Ashley is clearly happy for his club to play terrible football and fight relegation.
That ‘toxic’ atmosphere Savage mentions is a product of the owner’s conduct, and fans simply want a show of ambition which will never come from him.
