Newcastle United legend Rob Lee has added his voice to the chorus of those who want to see Elliot Anderson start the opening game of the season next week.

Elliot Anderson has been the stand-out player for Newcastle this pre-season with four goals in four games as well as an assist.

He came back to Newcastle’s training camp fitter and stronger than ever and ready to force his way into Eddie Howe‘s starting lineup, and so far there won’t be many people who’d deny him that opportunity.

Newcastle legend Rob Lee says Anderson is a dying breed

Former Magpie Rob Lee had a chat with another cult hero, Adam Pearson on his YouTube channel and Lee said that Anderson is the last of a dying breed. He told Pearson: “I just think Elliot Anderson should start he’s had a brilliant pre-season. I’d love to see him thrown in. I think he’s different.

“I think in my day I used to get forward and used to score goals and get in the box. I’m not sure if it’s the academies and the way they play with pass, pass, pass, pass but midfielders don’t want to get in the box anymore, you don’t see a goalscoring midfielder from the middle of the park. I think Elliot Anderson and the way that I saw one of his goals, where he ran past the ball and got played in, it’s a dying art and I hope he continues to do that.

“If he continues to play the way he has in pre-season, what people have told me and what I’ve seen, I think he should start.”

Anderson could take advantage of Tonali’s slow introduction to PL football

With a double-header of friendlies in the inaugural Sela Cup this weekend, Anderson will no doubt be given another chance to prove he is ready to step up to being a regular starter for Newcastle.

Sandro Tonali is likely to be introduced slowly into the first team following his arrival from AC Milan so that he can get up to speed with the English game which gives Anderson a chance to make an impression and give Howe the ultimate headache.

It’s going to be a huge season for the Whitley Bay lad who still has a decision to make over his international future with the Scotland Under 21 star being looked at by England too.
