Reporter claims Diego Carlos to Newcastle transfer is ‘looking less likely’

The Diego Carlos to Newcastle saga dominated the January transfer window.

One minute he was coming, the next he wasn’t. Then it was on. Then it was off again.

Eventually, Carlos remained with Sevilla, who were unwilling to budge on their asking price. Newcastle went elsewhere, signing Dan Burn from Brighton.

The player was keen to come to St James’ Park, with claims that he had even agreed a deal with the Magpies. It was even reported that he was in line to make his Toon debut against Leeds on January 22nd.

Obviously, that didn’t happen. A price just couldn’t be agreed, with Sevilla holding on to one of their star players midway through the season.

It was disappointing for Newcastle, but a wise decision from Sevilla given they were still in the La Liga title race at that point.

Signing players in January is always difficult – it’s much easier in the off season when clubs have time to find a replacement.

But does that mean Newcastle will make a fresh bid for Carlos in the coming months? The Daily Mail’s Craig Hope doesn’t think so.

Newcastle wanting Diego Carlos was ‘for January only’

The Daily Mail have published an extensive list of players Newcastle could target this summer, from goalkeepers to strikers.

The report states that a centre-back is wanted too, but there is no mention of Carlos in the article. Hope was asked about this on Twitter by a fan and responded.

He said: “I’d say Diego Carlos is looking less likely given age and fee, it felt like one for January only.”

The Brazilian defender has recently turned 29, which is a lot older than the other defenders Newcastle are looking at.

Sven Botman is 22, Josko Gvardiol is only 20, while Lloyd Kelly 23. They are players with a lot of potential who can still get better.

In contrast, Carlos should be at the peak of his powers. He was already going to be expensive in January, with Newcastle offering £30million. And even that wasn’t enough to tempt Sevilla into a sale.

While he’s a wonderful player, it’s probably for the best that we look elsewhere this summer. Negotiations with Sevilla weren’t pretty in January, and we could do without another prolonged saga.
