Report: What Newcastle’s Dan Burn did after tackle on Jarrod Bowen

Tempers flared at the end of West Ham United vs Newcastle United after a somewhat wild tackle from Dan Burn.

With the clock winding down and the Magpies closing in on a vital point, West Ham broke down the right while Emil Krafth lay on the floor injured.

The Hammers played on rather than putting the ball out, and lumped a ball up the flank that Jarrod Bowen latched on to. He couldn’t keep it in play, with the linesman flagging for a thrown in. Then moments later the Toon centre-back came flying in with a reducer.

Burn completely wiped out Bowen, who was not happy with the challenge – and rightly so in fairness.

It was a big challenge from Burn – an out of control ‘tackle’ that could have done a lot more damage than it did.

The pair were booked; Burn for the challenge and Bowen for his reaction. The West Ham winger squared up to Burn, which looked comical given the height difference between the two.

Dan Burn apologises for tackle

The tackle from Burn was cheered by the travelling Toon fans, chanting ‘he’s one of our own’ after the incident.

But the deadline day signing admitted he was in the wrong following full time.

According to the Athletic, Burn exited the team bus and apologised to Bowen for what he did. The pair then reportedly embraced.

No hard feelings then. That’s good to hear. It was a cynical challenge made by Burn, who perhaps hadn’t seen the linesman put his flag up.

It was wild, but you could argue the same for Craig Dawson’s challenge on Ryan Fraser in the first half that went unpunished.

Burn had another day to remember in a Toon shirt, while Bowen is having the season of his life at West Ham. The pair momentarily came to blows, but it’s all water under the bridge now.
