Report shares where Newcastle plan to go during pre-season

While the current campaign is still ongoing, Newcastle United are reportedly making plans for pre-season behind the scenes.

Eddie Howe took his team to Germany and Portugal during last summer, but it now looks like the Magpies will be travelling further afield.

According to the Athletic, Newcastle are going to be part of the Premier League’s upcoming pre-season tournament in the USA. This comes after the Toon’s planned trip to America collapsed last summer.

Howe’s side are set to be one of multiple top flight clubs that will head to America in July and take part in a round-robin tournament. The other teams that will be involved are Chelsea, Brighton and Leeds – if they avoid relegation to the Championship.

The Athletic’s report adds that the tournament is part of the Premier League’s ‘drive for further global expansion’, and that will suit Newcastle United too.

Pre-season plan is good news for Newcastle behind the scenes

While Newcastle are thriving on the pitch, the club are looking to do the same off it. New CEO Darren Eales is looking to boost the Magpies’ profile and bring in more revenue, as he bids to make the club a global powerhouse in the world game.

And a trip to America will certainly help towards that goal. It is a market that Newcastle want to tap in to, and explains why they want to be part of this summer tournament.

Playing against Premier League opposition will be a good test, while it will also give the club a chance to enhance their presence in that part of the world.

Fans are only focussed on the football and rightly so, but people behind the scenes are desperately trying to improve the commercial side of the club, as it is key towards the owners’ plan for sustained success.

That is why a pre-season tournament in America is great for the club, and it could be even better if we travel there as a Champions League side. It remains a possibility, with Newcastle currently fourth after 22 games.
