Anthony Gordon has missed Newcastle United’s previous two games with an ankle injury, and he could be out for a little while longer.

The winger made his first Newcastle start against Manchester City earlier this month, but Gordon has not been seen since.

He missed training in the buildup to the Wolves match, before Eddie Howe confirmed that he was facing a spell on the sidelines.

The £45million man was not involved in the win over Nottingham Forest, and now the Athletic have provided an update on when he could make his return.

Anthony Gordon could miss three more games due to injury

According to the Athletic, Gordon is at risk of missing Newcastle’s next three games after the international break.

First up is Manchester United on April 2nd, then we head to West Ham three days later. After that is is Brentford away on April 8th. Those are the three games that Gordon could be unavailable for.

If that proves to be the case, it will mean that the 22-year-old has missed five games in total. Add those to the two Carabao Cup fixtures he was ineligible for and it has been a frustrating start on Tyneside for Gordon.

Cruel timing for Newcastle’s January recruit

There is never a good time to have an injury, but the situation surrounding Gordon’s absence will be particularly frustrating.

Firstly, he had only just forced his way into Eddie Howe’s starting XI. Had it not been for this ankle problem he would probably would have started the games against Wolves and Forest.

Secondly, he is injured at a time when his positional rivals are also struggling. Miguel Almiron is on the sidelines with a hamstring problem, with Howe stating that he will be out for six weeks. That should be extra incentive for Gordon to return, as he will fancy his chances of starting ahead of Jacob Murphy.

There is also a question mark next to Allan Saint-Maximin’s name. He came off at half time against Forest, and is struggling for form since getting back into the starting lineup.

Hopefully Gordon can recover quicker than anticipated and seize the opportunity that is on his doorstep. It has been a tough start to his Newcastle career, and we are yet to truly see what he is capable of in a black and white shirt.
