Brazil face Croatia in the World Cup Quarter Final on Friday, with Bruno Guimaraes hoping to make his first start of the competition.

The Newcastle United midfielder has only made two appearances in Qatar so far, and is yet to be named in Tite’s starting lineup. The 25-year-old has been limited to two substitute appearances, coming off the bench against Switzerland and Cameroon.

Bruno remained on the bench in Brazil’s previous game, as they booked their place in the final eight of the competition.

The Selecao were sensational against South Korea, winning 4-1 after a dominant first half display. They scored some incredible team goals, with the likes of Lucas Paqueta and Richarlison finding the net.

Bruno could only cheer on his teammates from the bench, and that is reportedly where he will be on Friday as well.

According to Brazilian outlet Globo, Tite is likely to go with the same starting XI that beat South Korea on Monday night.

The only possible change is in defence, with Alex Sandro hoping to return from injury. However, Globo expect Danilo to continue at left-back.

Instead of turning to Bruno, Brazil are once again expected to name Casemiro and Paqueta in the middle of midfield. That is not a surprise, especially given how well the latter player against South Korea. His goal was outstanding.

The deeper Brazil go in the tournament, the less likely it feels that Bruno is going to feature. But he has played a part, and will also be an influential figure in training.

Whether or not the Newcastle superstar is disappointed with his World Cup minutes remains to be seen, but it certainly isn’t a blow for the Magpies. It should mean he is fresh and ready to return once domestic football kicks off again.

But for now, Bruno’s priority will be his international exploits, as his country looks to win a sixth World Cup. To do so, they need to get past 2018 finalists Croatia, and will hope to do so with Newcastle’s number 39 in reserve.
