Steve Bruce is still Newcastle United manager.
While the defeat to Brighton felt like the end, the fact remains that it was not.
Sunday morning brought news that Mike Ashley was standing by his manager, despite a run of just two wins in 20 games.
The Brighton defeat leaves Newcastle in 17th place. They are two points above Fulham with a game in hand, with nine games to go.

Had Fulham beat Leeds on Friday night, they would have dumped us in the bottom three. Would that have made a change to Bruce’s future? Who knows.
As it stands, Newcastle seem to be relying on Fulham not catching them. That’s a dangerous tactic, considering how much Scott Parker’s side have improved in recent months.
But if Newcastle do go down to the Championship, will that signal the end of Bruce?
Change in the Championship?
According to the Athletic, there was talk that Bruce could remain at St James’ Park even if his side are relegated. However, the Brighton game seems to have changed things.
They claim that sources who thought Bruce would stay ‘no longer retain the same confidence’.
If Newcastle go down, the club will have no excuses. Their negligence will have come back to bite them.
It would be tough for fans, who have seen this decline coming for a long time.

Many fans won’t return if they drop into the Championship, but there’ll be even less if Bruce is still the manager.
No matter what happens this summer, Newcastle and Bruce must part ways.
While Ashley has backed his manager to keep the club in the Premier League, he must understand that keeping him for another year would be catastrophic.
Newcastle being relegated to the Championship would be devastating. But Newcastle starting the Championship with Bruce as manager is unthinkable.
