Report provides positive news on when Jonjo Shelvey will return from injury

Jonjo Shelvey is yet to play for Newcastle United at all this season, but will soon return from injury.

The 30-year-old hasn’t played a competitive game for the Magpies since April. His last appearance was the 1-0 home defeat to Liverpool towards the end of last season.

Injury ended his campaign early, but he was back in pre-season and looked in brilliant shape. The midfielder was playing well, and seemed raring to go for the new Premier League season.

Then injury struck again.

Shelvey was forced off in a friendly with Benfica, and had to undergo surgery for a hamstring injury. It was initially suggested that it would keep him out of action until after the World Cup, leading to speculation that he wouldn’t even be included in Eddie Howe’s 25-man Premier League squad.

However, he is on course to return sooner than anticipated.

Shelvey will return from injury next month

According to the Northern Echo, Shelvey is getting very close to a return. They state that he should return to first-team action early next month.

The report adds that he is making good progress and could return in the first half of October rather than November, which was the initial diagnosis.

That will be a huge boost to Howe, who is a big fan of Shelvey. Shortly after becoming Newcastle manager, he called Shelvey an ‘incredible technician‘.

Unsurprisingly, Shelvey has been a mainstay in Howe’s XI. When fit, the £12million signing has started every game bar one.

He has been a big miss this season, forcing Bruno Guimaraes to play in a more defensive role. Once Shelvey does return, it should allow Bruno to play higher up the pitch. That is his preferred position.

With the Northern Echo stating that Shelvey should return in the first half of next month, we could potentially see him face Manchester United on October 16th.

Given our recent injury woes, getting Shelvey back ahead of schedule is fantastic news.
