Newcastle United are eyeing a summer move for Cardiff City midfielder Will Vaulks, according to a report by Wales Online.
The Magpies will once again cut their cloth accordingly and could dip into the Championship to recruit players.
Vaulks has enjoyed a decent campaign in the Welsh capital and Newcastle aren’t alone in the race to sign him.
According to the report, Norwich City and Sheffield United are also keen on doing a deal for the 27-year-old.
The ex-Rotherham star might not come cheap either. It’s claimed in the piece that it could take £7 million to snatch him from Cardiff.
Vaulks has played 42 games for the Bluebirds during 2020/21, scoring five goals and registering two assists.
The player with six Wales caps would bring some versatility to the Newcastle midfield.
He can play as a conventional central midfielder, or drop deeper and play in the hole in front of a back four.
It seems unlikely that Newcastle will spend a fortune this summer but it’s fair to say that Steve Bruce will want some new players.
Vaulks shone with Dundee and after playing 142 games for them, he moved to England and made 137 appearances for the Millers.
At 27, he’s yet to experience first-team football and Newcastle could hand him that shot this summer.
What would Vaulks bring to the Newcastle ranks?
The midfielder has proved a quality performer at second tier level and his sheer determination could make him a smart recruit.
He works hard, tackles well and is also capable of picking out a pass to his teammates.
Vaulks has chipped in with a few goals but by his own admission he perhaps should be registering more goal contributions.
Given he’s never played a Premier League game, £7 million might sound like a risk.
He would arrive at the club with plenty of games under his belt though and if he hits the ground running, he might prove a solid signing for the club.
