Newcastle United’s transfer plans will dramatically change if Allan Saint-Maximin leaves the club.
The Frenchman is reportedly a target for Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur, two sides that are looking to close the gap between themselves and the top two.
They’ve both spent big money this summer, but they’re not finished yet. But will they make a move for the Magpies’ talisman?

Newcastle waiting for Chelsea and Spurs to move
According to the Northern Echo, Newcastle are braced for both London clubs to make a move for Saint-Maximin. They are waiting for an official approach, after the two teams enquired about him via intermediaries earlier in the summer.
The 25-year-old is valued at around £40million, which should be no problem for Thomas Tuchel and Antonio Conte.
However, if they do decide to make a bid worth that much, it could represent a problem for Newcastle. They will then have a huge decision to make that could define the rest of their transfer window.

Saint-Maximin bid would create a conundrum for Newcastle
Getting an extra £40million to spend could really help Dan Ashworth and co this summer. We still have multiple positions that need improving, but arguably not enough money to do it at the standard we now desire.
Moussa Diaby was too expensive. Alexander Isak was too expensive. However, players like that would suddenly be more attainable with an extra £40million in the bank.
It would allow Howe to get the players he needs, as he looks to improve on last season’s strong Premier League campaign.
However, selling Saint-Maximin arguably wouldn’t solve anything. Yes, we would have more money to spend. But we would have an extra player that needs replacing.

We’re currently looking for a winger to play alongside ASM, not instead of him. Getting a player of his calibre would probably cost just as much, then we’re back to square one.
Unless Chelsea or Tottenham come in with stupid money for Saint-Maximin – like the £60million Spurs spent on Richarlison – there’s no way we should let him go. It would be a huge mistake.
In the words of Howe himself, Saint-Maximin is ‘devastating‘, and should be a key player for us this season. There might be interest from elsewhere, but he needs to stay at St James’ Park.
