Report: Newcastle surprised no Premier League clubs challenged them to sign Sven Botman

Sven Botman is proving to be every bit the Rolls Royce defender Newcastle fans thought he was when he joined the Magpies in the summer.

It was a long, drawn out transfer saga, but eventually Eddie Howe got his man. He wanted him in January but Amanda Staveley and co couldn’t get a deal over the line. But Newcastle were not going to miss out, and went in again for him when last season drew to a close.

This time Lille were more willing sellers, and all Dan Ashworth had to do was fend off interest from AC Milan. There were plenty of twists and turns, but in the end Botman arrived at St James’ Park instead of the San Siro.

It looked like quite a coup for Newcastle, with the Dutchman signing a five-year contract with his new club. He cost £35million, making him the most expensive defender in Toon history.

But so far he looks to be worth every penny. After beginning the season on the bench, the 22-year-old has now established himself in Howe’s starting XI. His recent performances have been excellent, contributing to Newcastle having the best defence in the league. Botman has impressed teammate Jacob Murphy, who said that football was ‘too easy‘ for him after the 0-0 draw with Manchester United.

The former Ajax player is yet to taste defeat with Newcastle, having missed the 2-1 loss to Liverpool back in August.

It has been a tremendous start to the season for Botman, and Toon officials have been left shocked.

Why Newcastle have been surprised by Botman

The surprise hasn’t come from Botman’s ability. Newcastle knew just how good he was when they bought him, with a report stating they believe he can become one of the world’s best defenders.

Instead, the surprise comes from the lack of Premier League clubs trying to sign him. The Daily Mail report that Howe and the Toon owners were shocked to see no other English teams identify his potential and try to sign him themselves.

Botman had been a target for Premier League clubs in the past. There was talk of a move to Wolves back in the summer of 2021.

But come the summer of 2022, AC Milan were the only club Newcastle had to beat to sign Botman. That said a lot too, as they had just won Serie A and were going to be in the Champions League again. They obviously saw something in him, with Paolo Maldini wanting to sign him. And he knows a thing or two about defending.

Yet no Premier League club tried to steal Botman from Newcastle. That’s despite the fact Tottenham and Chelsea were both in the market for a centre-back during the summer.

But their loss is our gain, and Botman is already establishing himself as a top class defender. And the most exciting thing for Newcastle is that he can clearly get even better too.

That should worry Premier League clubs, who must be scratching their heads wondering why they didn’t buy a Rolls Royce during the summer.
