Newcastle United are set for a transfer meeting with Kristjan Asllani of Empoli, according to Italian reporter Alfredo Pedulla.

The 20-year-old was actually linked with West Ham back in May per Calciomercato, but it seems that Newcastle’s interest is now the most advanced.

The Albainian has been part of the Italian side’s academy from a young age, playing for Empoli at youth level. In addition, he’s already picked up two caps for Albania.

Furthermore, Asllani is starting to make an impact in the first team for Empoli. This past season in Serie A he played 23 times, picking up a goal and an assist along the way. He’s definitely a really exciting young talent, so it’s no wonder Newcastle are planning on meeting Asllani.

Newcastle have a lot of strength in their midfield, Asllani might struggle for minutes

Newcastle’s midfield options are currently very strong. Jonjo Shelvey, Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton established themselves as the three in the middle for Eddie Howe. Meanwhile, Joe Willock and Sean Longstaff (who recently signed a new deal) have done well when given the opportunities this season.

So it’s hard to see how the Albanian would find minutes. Asllani is linked with West Ham, he might find they would be able to play him more often. The Hammers are looking for depth in that position which would appeal to him.

The Magpies will likely focus on smarter signings as opposed to big-money moves in this transfer window. Granted they’ll likely spend more than most seasons under Mike Ashley in terms of transfer fees.

In one way going for an underrated gem like Asllani would make sense. The 20-year-old could improve his game and learn a lot from the rest of Newcastle’s midfield options. Eddie Howe could help develop his game and meet his potential and beyond.

However, we may not see a new midfielder arrive this summer. Obviously, adding quality to any position is always welcome. But, the Toon needs to strengthen in other positions more urgently.

They’re the most likely to sign Hugo Ekitike from Stade Reims. A young talented striker who has shone this season in Ligue 1 and who knows where the net is.

The fact that Asllani is linked with West Ham too means that pulling off a deal will be that extra bit difficult. David Moyes will be desperate for a midfielder, whereas for Newcastle aren’t requiring as much strengthening in the middle of the park.
