Report: Newcastle rival Leeds and Burnley for Chelsea midfielder

Newcastle are set to rival Leeds and Burnley to sign Chelsea player Ross Barkley during the January transfer window, according to 90Min.

The Magpies will go in search of new players when the window reopens. Interest in Barkley sees them once again linked with the Chelsea man after summer enquiries.

Barkley is down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge. After an underwhelming season at Aston Villa last term, the 27-year-old was handed a surprise reprieve.

WAYNE ROONEY TO EVERTON IS A JOKE.

The midfielder looks to be on borrowed time with the Blues. He’s at the age where he needs to play and doing that looks unlikely with Chelsea.

Barkley was linked with several clubs in the summer. Ultimately his £100,000-a-week wages deterred a lot of interested parties from making concrete moves.

Money is unlikely to be a problem for PIF in January and they will do whatever it takes to help Newcastle stave off the threat of relegation.

Barkley has been at Chelsea since 2018. He’s failed to hold down a regular place in the team making 89 appearances in total, with a large number coming from the bench.

During his season at Villa Park, he scored three goals and registered one assist from 24 appearances.

Realistic: Barkley would be a quality signing for Newcastle

Newcastle have to lower the expectation. Although their new wealth is exciting, it’ll take a few years before they can attract the world’s elite players.

For now, they have to be realistic and Barkley would represent a decent addition, to say the least.

He can play as a conventional midfielder or in the No.10 role and that versatility could really help the Newcastle squad.

Chelsea are likely to be open to a sale for Barkley. He is out of contract in 2023 and as a result, he probably won’t cost a fortune.

Newcastle are in desperate need of a lift and perhaps Barkley is the signing to provide that during the January transfer window.
