Thanks to the wealth of PIF, Newcastle United are now one of the richest clubs in the world.
The Saudi-backed consortium completed a deal to buy the Magpies last week, with PIF now owning 80% of the club.
It’s their involvement that threatens to take Newcastle to the top of the game. But it is also the reason the deal has received so much scrutiny, amid Saudi Arabia’s shocking human rights record.
Buying Newcastle United is PIF’s first venture into European football, but it might not be the last according to reports in Italy.
Could PIF buy Inter Milan as well as Newcastle?
According to Italian newspaper Libero, PIF are ready to offer €1billion to buy Inter Milan. That’s a lot more than what they paid for Newcastle.
The report adds that the Saudis are also looking at Ligue 1 side Marseille and possibly a team in Brazil.
This isn’t the first time that PIF have been linked with Inter. Throughout the Newcastle takeover saga, there were murmurs that they could move for the Italian giants. Whether that was alongside or instead of Newcastle was never stated.
But it would certainly be alongside the Magpies now with Mike Ashley selling the club to PIF.
If they did buy Inter and Marseille, it would give PIF one of the most impressive football portfolios in the world.
Who knows where it would leave Newcastle. Would it even be possible for PIF to own multiple clubs who are competing to be the best in Europe? Would it create a conflict of interests?
Manchester City’s owners have multiple clubs, but not to the same extent that PIF are reportedly targeting.
Of course, this is all just rumours at the moment, but it could lead to another dramatic twist in the new ownership of Newcastle United.
