According to CalcioMercatoWeb, Newcastle United want to sign Inter Milan duo Hakan Calhanoglu and Denzel Dumfries. The duo impressed in Serie A this past season and would come in a double deal worth £51 million.
Considering the quality both of them possess, Dumfries and Calhanoglu’s fee would be a great deal. It will come as a surprise to some Toon fans to see them emerge as transfer targets for Newcastle.
Prior to this season, both have been on the radar of a number of clubs Man United have been linked recently with Dumfries. In addition, the full-back was one of the Netherlands’ standout stars in the Euros which earned him the move to Inter.
Arsenal were interested in Calhanoglu in June of last year. However, the Turkish international opted to join Inter Milan instead. Furthermore, Calhanoglu has been praised by Gary Linekar for his creativity. Last summer the ex-England striker described him as ‘exceptionally talented’ (BBC One, 7:39pm, June 11th 2021).
When you consider how important both players are to the Serie A side, it’s no wonder Newcastle want Dumfries and Calhanoglu.
The competition will make it difficult for Newcastle to land the duo
Newcastle want Dumfries and Calhanoglu, but they could face some stiff competition. The duo have proven they can perform at the top level with Inter Milan.
So if the Italian side is open to offers for them, you’d suspect a number of top clubs would be interested. The Magpies have the funds to compete with anyone under PIF. But the lack of European football will be a hurdle when attracting big names.
It’s not impossible though, both Kieran Trippier and Bruno Guimaraes signed in January. Newcastle were fighting for survival when they arrived. Trippier and Bruno both played their part in an impressive 11th-place finish.
When it comes to Dumfries he typically tends to play as a right-back. The Toon already has Trippier, Emil Krafth and Javier Manquillo in that position. Even if Krafth or Manquillo were sold, it’s unlikely that Dumfries would want to play second fiddle to Trippier.
As for Calhanoglu, he could definitely be a part of the starting XI. He tends to play as an attacking midfielder, so he could play further forward in a midfield three.
But, Newcastle have a number of options in midfield. It would add to the already existing midfield dilemma Eddie Howe has. There’s no doubt Dumfries and Calhanoglu’s fee would be a great deal. However, when you look at the positions they play, it may not be in their best interest, especially for Dumfries.
The Magpies should focus on getting in a centre-back and a striker. Newcastle is looking at transfer targets in those said positions. They’re ‘almost in place’ to sign Hugo Ekitike, but there have been some complications. Also, they’re edging closer to signing Sven Botman of Lille.
