Tottenham Hotspur are leading the race to sign Djed Spence of Nottingham Forest. However, Newcastle United are one of a number of clubs now looking to sign the flying right-back, according to Football.London.

Spence has just finished an impressive stint on loan with Forest where they won promotion to the Premier League. They defeated Huddersfield 1-0 at Wembley this weekend. The full-back was one of the standout players in the Championship this season and was labelled as ‘fantastic’ by Andy Townsend on talkSPORT.

At only 21-years-old, it’s no wonder many clubs are linked with Spence, with Eddie Howe seemingly keeping a keen eye on him.

He looks technically very capable on the ball and demonstrates a lot of confidence. It’s very unlikely that the full-back will still be with Middlesborough in the Championship next season. Spence moving to Spurs would bring strong cover to their defence and could be one for the future.

With top clubs pursuing Spence’s services, Newcastle may struggle to land him

The fact Newcastle want Spence shows just had strong of a season he’s had. The Magpies already have Kieran Trippier and even Emil Krafth has impressed when covering for the England international.

However, the club may very well see Spence as one for the future. Trippier isn’t going to be around forever, but he could be a great influence on the right-back.

But with clubs like Borussia Dortmund and Tottenham being in the Champions League next season, they could have an advantage over Newcastle in the race.

Furthermore, the Magpies have other positions they need to prioritise this summer. They need a first-choice left-back and attacking options out wide and down the middle.

They’re currently favourites to land Stade Reims strike Hugo Ekitike. Additionally, they’ve been linked with Atletico left-back Renan Lodi, they suspect Matt Targett has doubts about joining on a permanent deal.

So Newcastle may want Spence, but he shouldn’t be their prime focus. Those areas previously addressed need to be the priority. Whilst they can compete with the other clubs linked with Spence, they need to be careful with how they spend.

With a very busy January this year, the Toon will want to avoid breaching Financial Fair Play. This summer we could see less big money spending and focus on smarter signings.
