TEAMtalk have reported that Newcastle United has joined the race for Queens Park Rangers striker Lyndon Dykes. Five other sides are said to be interested – Rangers, Norwich, Burnley, Crystal Palace and Bournemouth.

QPR currently sit in fifth place in the Championship table with a game in hand, as they push to remain in the play-offs at the end of the season.

Dykes has certainly contributed towards that push in the 2021/22 campaign. The Scottish striker has 7 goals and 2 assists to his name this season.

With Callum Wilson being out for the next eight weeks and Dwight Gayle being the only other striking option at the club, Newcastle needs to sign at least one striker.

Dykes set for another impressive Championship season, should his form continue

Dykes joined QPR in the summer of 2020 from Livingston for around £2m (The Scottish Sun). In his first Championship campaign, he got 12 goals and 5 assists.

With him more than halfway to matching his tally, you’d think the Scottish international would at least equal his goal tally from last season. QPR have been one of the highest-scoring sides this season, only being bested by Fulham, Blackburn and Bournemouth,

Dykes is their top scorer so far this season, but the goals are well spread across the team. Joe Willock’s brother Chris and Ilias Chair both have 6 goals, while Charlie Austin has 5 goals.

Mark Warburton has been able to create a side that fans of the hoops truly believe in. Even if they miss out on promotion this season, they’d be one of the favourites to go up next season.

Newcastle should look elsewhere, they have the funds to explore better options

Dykes would be an underwhelming purchase if the Toon Army signed him. If another striker, as well as him, was signed then perhaps he would be a solid understudy.

But with the first transfer window of the new ownership underway, Newcastle can explore more exciting options. They might be in a relegation battle, but the history of the club, its fan base and the potential rebuild could appeal to many.

Additionally, Dykes has only played about a season and a half of Championship football. Signing him and asking him to be the main source of goals would be a big ask.
