According to Calciomercato, Newcastle are interested in a move for Yoann Barbet.
The Frenchman currently plays in the Championship for Brentford, but his contract expires this summer.

The 25-year-old is a defender, able to play at centre-back or on the left side of defence. According to whoscored.com, Barbet has played 14 times as a left-back this season, and 15 times as a central defender.
He’s young, versatile and available for nothing in the summer. Sounds like the typical Mike Ashley signing.
Newcastle are reportedly not alone in Barbet pursuit
The Magpies may have a battle on their hands, as the report also states that Aston Villa are keen. And Villa might have an ace up their sleeve.

They’re now managed by Dean Smith, who used to be Barbet’s manager at Brentford.

However, Newcastle could have the lure of Premier League football over Villa.
Rafa Benitez’s side are seven points clear of the relegation zone with seven games to play. As for Villa, they’ve just entered the Championship playoff race, making a late push for promotion.

Barbet is a popular player at Brentford, having moved to Griffin Park in 2015. He’s never played in the top flight, either during his time in England or in France.
His lack of experience at the top would be a concern, but considering he’s likely to be available for nothing, Barbet seems like a low risk option that could be worth taking.
