Tottenham Hotspur wants to sell Harry Winks this summer. The club are willing to let him go for £20 million, but they’re open to package deals which include a lower initial fee with add-ons, as they try and drum up interest. Newcastle United are one of the clubs interested along with Southampton and Leicester City, according to the Evening Standard.

Newcastle could be looking to add to their existing midfield options this summer. An area of the pitch which is one of their strongest under Eddie Howe. The Toon boss has already had a selection dilemma picking his midfield three.

When it comes to Newcastle’s options in the middle of the pitch, they have plenty already. Bruno Guimaraes, Jonjo Shelvey, Joelinton, Joe Willock and Sean Longstaff are all well-liked by Howe. So if they are to sign more players in that position, it would have to be someone with real class.

Winks simply doesn’t bolster Newcastle’s options in midfield

If Newcastle are interested in Winks, some fans would find that a real disappointment. At one point the 26-year-old looked destined for great things but really never kicked on.

Winks’ transfer fee in today’s market might be cheaper than many other midfielders, but with his lack of game time, it’s hard to justify £20 million. Based on current form, all of Newcastle’s options in midfield are better than the 10-time capped England international.

Someone like Longstaff (who recently signed a new deal), is a player I would rather have in the Magpies’ squad based on current form. He’s someone who looks vastly better than he did under Steve Bruce and is looking closer to where he was under Rafa Benitez.

Lucas Pacqueta is a name that has been linked with the Magpies. That’s an example of the type of name the Toon should be setting their sights on. Bruno would certainly love to see his friend join him on Tyneside.

With an injection of large amounts of cash thanks to the PIF takeover, the Toon needs to be more ambitious. They will have to be careful about how much they spent to avoid trouble with Financial Fair Play. Winks’ transfer fee may be fairly low but they can set their sights much higher now.
