Newcastle United will make an attempt to sign Norwich City star Todd Cantwell during the summer.
According to Eurosport, the Magpies are keen to enter the race to sign the sought-after Championship star.
Both clubs are fighting to avoid being in the Championship next season.
Newcastle will aim to keep their Premier League status intact, whilst Norwich are currently 10 points clear at the summit of the second tier.
The 23-year-old is viewed by many as one of the Championship’s top players and it seems certain he will be a Premier League player next season.
Sky Sports have previously claimed that Cantwell won’t leave Carrow Road for anything less than £30 million.
The 23-year-old has scored four goals and claimed five assists from 23 appearances during 2020/21.
Last season he managed 37 outings in the Premier League, helping himself to seven goals in the process.
Cantwell operates largely on the left-hand side and boasts a large amount of potential.
Jamal Lewis signed for the Magpies last summer and that could be a big pull for Cantwell to choose Newcastle.
The duo spent a lot of time playing on the left-hand side for Norwich during 2019/20 and struck up a good relationship.
Steve Bruce’s team have struggled badly for goals this season, with a creative spark severely lacking.
Would Cantwell be a good signing?
It has to be said that he would be an exciting addition to the Newcastle ranks.
The Norwich star has earned praise from ex-Premier League striker Chris Sutton in the past.
He told Radio 5 Live in June 2020: “He’s an exceptional talent – I think one day he will play in the top six.”
Of course, Newcastle fans won’t be overly concerned about what the known Newcastle basher Sutton thinks.
He does, however, follow Norwich closely having spent time with them as a player.
Cantwell fits the profile of a Magpies signing nicely and would check in at St James’ Park with a great deal of potential to improve.
Firstly, Newcastle must work hard to get over their line in the quest to secure Premier League football for next season.
If they do that, Cantwell would represent a strong start to the transfer window if they can secure his services.
