Newcastle United will play Everton next season in the Premier League, but that nearly wasn’t the case.

The Toffees came so close to relegation, but secured their top flight status with a win over Crystal Palace in their penultimate game.

The 3-2 win over the Eagles inspired wild scenes inside Goodison Park, as the Everton faithful celebrated survival.

It’s been an awful season for Everton, and there’s nothing to suggest good times are on the horizon for them. That’s because of mistakes they’ve made in years gone by. And they’re mistakes Newcastle are keen to avoid themselves.

Everton’s transfer mistakes are a warning to Newcastle

The Magpies became very very rich last year. The Saudi-backed takeover ensured we have the money to help us compete much higher up the Premier League table.

However, we can’t simply buy instant success. In fact, we will actually be restricted in the early stages of this project.

Financial fair play could be a big issue for Newcastle’s new owners, and it’s something they must be very mindful of.

It’s proving to be a problem for Everton, and the Athletic report that Newcastle are keen to ensure they don’t make the same mistakes.

Everton have wasted so much money since 2016

Throughout the 21st century, Everton have been a fairly consistent club. They’ve been in the top half more often than not, and even flirted with European football. And they were able to do it despite not having anywhere near as much money as the big boys.

However, they suddenly came into money in 2016 when Farhad Moshiri bought 49.9% of the club. He now owns 68.6%.

His arrival prompt increased transfer kitties, with Everton spending more than £500million on new players since his arrival.

But they’ve wasted so much of it. Yannick Bolasie, Morgan Schneiderlin, Davvy Klaassen, Cenk Tosun, Jean-Philippe Gbamin. These are just a few examples of players Everton spent big money on that didn’t deliver in a blue shirt.

Now their spending is limited, which hindered Rafa Benitez last summer and could also impact Frank Lampard this year.

Newcastle simply must not make the same mistakes. Every signing must deliver and help the club climb the table. We can’t just throw money around aimlessly and hope something sticks. Everton have proven that doesn’t work.

That’s why the Magpies are having to be careful in the transfer window. Overspend now on rubbish and it could seriously hurt us in the coming years.

Newcastle need steady progression to keep in line with financial fair play.
