Report: Newcastle already making progress towards first summer signing

The summer transfer window could be very interesting for Newcastle United, especially if the Magpies qualify for the Champions League.

Booking our place in Europe’s elite competition will allow us to attract a higher quality of player, and it will also allow us to spend more. Champions League qualification will see our revenue increase, which will massively help us out in terms of financial fair play.

But no matter where we finish, it will likely be an exciting summer transfer window. And progress is already being made behind the scenes.

According to the Chronicle, the Magpies have already started work on their summer recruitment drive, with Steve Nickson back at the club after scouting potential new arrivals.

They add that Newcastle are actually already making good progress on one signing that they have been looking to complete in recent months.

That is massively encouraging, and it will be intriguing to see who that player turns out to be, regardless of whether it’s a first-team recruit or a youth team arrival.

Top four finish will dictate Newcastle’s summer signings

While Newcastle are already working towards summer incomings, a lot of our business will depend on where we finish in the Premier League.

A top four finish is still on the cards, with Eddie Howe’s side sitting fourth after 22 games.

But whether we qualify for the Champions League or not, the positions we will look to improve in will likely remain the same.

The priority has to be a centre-midfielder. That should be where most of our money goes. Howe wanted one in January, but failed to get one. Now we look massively depleted in that area of the pitch.

It has been reported that the club will also look to sign a defender, which could coincide with Jamaal Lascelles leaving St James’ Park. The Northern Echo have stated that Newcastle will listen to offers for the 29-year-old.

As well as those two positions, a young striker could potentially be on the cards too. At the moment we only have Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson, and could do with another option.

Our squad is currently stretched, and it will be put under even more pressure next season with a return to Europe looming.

There is a lot of work to be done, but it should be yet another exciting transfer window for Toon fans. And progress is already being made on the first deal of the summer.
