It looks like Matty Longstaff might be on his way to Aberdeen.

That’s according to Telegraph reporter Mike McGrath, who claims that Newcastle are negotiating a deal to send the midfielder north of the border.

Steve Bruce confirmed earlier in the week that Longstaff will leave the club on loan ‘in the next few days’.

It had been reported that multiple Championship clubs were keen on the 21-year-old, with the likes of Huddersfield, Blackburn and Sheffield United interested.

But instead it looks like he’s going to join Scottish Premiership side Aberdeen. Interestingly, the Dons are currently managed by former Newcastle player Stephen Glass.

Aberdeen loan could be the making of Matty Longstaff

The youngest Longstaff brother desperately needs first-team experience.

After breaking into the first-team in 2019, he’s had limited opportunities. Last year was particularly tough, making just five Premier League appearances.

He’s yet to feature this season, but was on the bench for Wednesday night’s Carabao Cup exit to Burnley.

It’s essential that he plays consistent first-team football. Only then will he start to develop. He clearly is a talented player, but needs more minutes under his belt.

Hopefully he gets that at Aberdeen, assuming a deal goes ahead. The Dons have had a strong start to the season, picking up seven points from their opening three games.

Matty will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of his brother Sean, who also had a loan spell in Scotland with Kilmarnock. He can also look at Freddie Woodman for inspiration, who joined Aberdeen temporarily in 2018.
