Newcastle United defender Matt Targett is reportedly being watched by England ahead of the latest international break.

That’s according to the Daily Mail, who state the Toon left-back is one of multiple options being assessed by Gareth Southgate and his team.

The Three Lions are set to play this month, taking on Switzerland on March 26th then Cote D’Ivoire three days later. Both games are friendlies.

England have plenty of injuries to contest with, including one to Newcastle star Kieran Trippier, meaning Southgate is having to look elsewhere for squad members.

And that could present an opportunity to Trippier’s Toon teammate.

England callup would be well deserved for Matt Targett

Targett joined Newcastle United on deadline day, signing on loan for the rest of the season from Aston Villa.

The 26-year-old has played pretty much every minute of every game since his arrival. The only fixture he didn’t feature in was the clash with his parent side where he was ineligible.

But ever since donning the Newcastle shirt for the first time, Targett has been a revelation. He’s everything you’d want in a fullback. It’s mad to think Aston Villa decided to replace him with Lucas Digne.

First and foremost, he knows how to defend. That’s the main thing.

However, he’s more than just that. He’s incredibly composed in possession, something you haven’t often been able to say about Newcastle defenders in recent years. Targett has incredible energy too, getting up and down the flank throughout 90 minutes.

He’s been a wonderful signing, and will hopefully become a permanent Magpie in the summer. Newcastle have reportedly already agreed a £15million fee with Aston Villa.

The Southampton academy graduate has never represented his country, but has played 12 times for England’s Under-21s.

Given his incredible start to 2022, Targett is certainly worthy of a senior England callup.
