Lucien Favre appears to be one of the number one contenders for the Newcastle United job.

There still isn’t a vacancy at St James’ Park, with Steve Bruce yet to be relieved of his duties. However, confirmation of his departure is reportedly expected before the Tottenham game.

While Newcastle won’t have a new full-time boss for that game, multiple managers are being linked with the Toon job.

One name that is constantly being mentioned Lucien Favre. The 63-year-old is one of the more high profile managers who is currently out of work, which would make him much more attainable.

Favre nearly moved to the Premier League this summer, but reportedly turned down the chance to become Crystal Palace manager.

With the Newcastle job set to become available, Favre could get another chance to possibly manage in England. And the Northern Echo state that he is keen to take this opportunity.


They report that the Swiss coach has contacted Newcastle via an intermediary to confirm his interest in replacing Bruce.

Would Lucien Favre be a good choice as Newcastle manager?

Favre would certainly be an exciting choice for Toon fans because of his attacking brand of football. That’s something we haven’t seen at St James’ Park for a long time.

Both Rafa Benitez and Bruce were very pragmatic during their respective tenures in the SJP dugout. That’s not Favre’s style though, who is also known for bringing through young players. That’s something that will certainly entice him to the new owners.

However, Favre’s interest in taking over could be bad news for one Newcastle player – Allan Saint-Maximin. The pair have history from their time at Nice together.

If Favre does become Toon boss, that relationship will need to be rebuilt. Saint-Maximin is one of, if not the, most popular player at Newcastle right now, and fans won’t want to see him pushed aside.

For now though, it’s very interesting to see how keen Favre is to become Newcastle manager. The fact he’s actually told the club that is telling.

But there are plenty of other names linked, including Frank Lampard and Antonio Conte. Amanda Staveley and co have a very big decision to make…
