Report: Liverpool owner is worried about Newcastle amid FSG sale plans

Liverpool could soon join Newcastle United in undergoing an owner change in recent history.

The Toon takeover went through last October, and has led to a remarkable surge up the Premier League table for the Magpies. Amanda Staveley and co have made some excellent decisions that have reenergised the club, both on and off the pitch.

Eddie Howe has came in and is conducting a sensational turnaround, while new signings have arrived and made a huge difference.

It is all leading to a very bright future at St James’ Park. However, the future isn’t quite as clear on the other side of the country.

It was recently reported that Liverpool have been put up for sale. The Athletic broke the news that their American owners FSG are inviting offers for the club, meaning their 12-year stay at Anfield could be coming to an end.

There is no speculation on who could replace them, or whether or not a takeover of Liverpool is on the immediate horizon. But a new report from the Liverpool Echo has provided information on what FSG think about Newcastle and their newfound wealth.

Liverpool owner worried about Newcastle

According to the Liverpool Echo, FSG president Mike Gordon has been very open behind the scenes about his concerns regarding Newcastle.

Gordon is reportedly the most hands-on FSG member at Liverpool, and he has privately spoke about the looming threat of Newcastle.

The Liverpool Echo report that Gordon has spoke about being concerned that Liverpool cannot compete financially with State-owned clubs such as Newcastle, Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain.

80% of Newcastle United is owned by PIF, the sovereign wealth fund of Saudi Arabia.

These aren’t new concerns from Liverpool. Jurgen Klopp has spoke in the press about Newcastle’s new financial power, admitting that his side have a ceiling unlike the Magpies.

It led to a bit of back and forth between the two clubs, with Newcastle reportedly not very happy about what Klopp had said.

Now it has been reported that one of Liverpool’s ownership group is concerned, amid claims that they want out. The threat of Newcastle United is causing a real problem in the footballing world, as an emerging force from the North East threatens to go all the way to the top.

With Manchester United now up for sale too, English football could look very different in the coming years.
