Javi Manquillo hasn’t been seen yet during Newcastle United’s pre-season preparations, but the defender wants to remain a Magpie.
The Spaniard has been conspicuous by his absence, with no initial word on why he hadn’t reported back for training like the rest of his teammates.
However, it has since been reported that he is receiving treatment for an injury back in Spain.
That’s certainly a blow for the 28-year-old, who is missing out on precious time to prove his worth to boss Eddie Howe.
But, regardless of his standing in the squad, Manquillo wants to stay at Newcastle.

According to the Chronicle, the right-back wants to stay and fight for his place at St James’ Park. That’s despite the fact that he has interest from Spanish clubs.
Manquillo clearly has the desire to be a part of Howe’s Toon plans, but it is easier said than done. He has fallen down the pecking order since the start of the year.
For a long time he was our most reliable full-back, and played well under Steve Bruce who called the defender ‘terrific‘ in late 2019. However, he is no longer guaranteed minutes.
Kieran Trippier’s arrival relegated him to backup, and then Emil Krafth enjoyed a Joelinton-like renaissance.
That means Manquillo is now third choice right-back for Howe. He also has more competition on the left, with Matt Targett signing permanently.
However, Manquillo is a good utility option, and his versatility surely appeals to the Toon manager. It might be difficult for him to get minutes, but you know he will be reliable if called upon.
If he wants to stay then fair enough, good luck to him. He’s obviously settled in the North East, and appreciates the direction the club is going in.
But despite his desire to stay, it is going to be very difficult for Manquillo to force his way into Howe’s side.
