Newcastle United seem determined to sign Diego Carlos from Sevilla.
The 28-year-old emerged as a target during the early struggles of trying to land Sven Botman. Then it was reported that the Magpies actually wanted to sign them both.
If Newcastle’s recruitment had gone to plan, they could have had an all new centre-back pairing of Carlos and Botman right now. That’s a huge upgrade on what we have currently.
However, the pursuit of Botman has fallen flat, despite the Daily Mail claiming that Newcastle are still in contact with Lille.
Carlos appears to be the main target at the moment, with PIF reportedly awaiting a response to their improved offer of £28million.
Sky Sports have claimed that progress is being made, and that the Brazilian is keen on the move.
Why Diego Carlos’ agents have been impressed with Newcastle
It’s all but certain that a deal won’t be done in time for Watford game tomorrow. Instead, Howe will have to utilise the defenders already at his disposal.
However, the noises around the Carlos transfer sound promising. According to the Chronicle, the Sevilla ace’s representatives have been ‘taken aback’ by Newcastle’s attempts to sign their client.
If the player and his representatives are interested in the move then that’s half the battle won. But this will still be a difficult deal.
Sevilla are second in La Liga, looking to challenge Real Madrid for the title. And in Carlos, they’ve got one of La Liga’s top defenders in their ranks.
It begs the question, why on earth would he want to swap that for a relegation battle at St James’ Park?
But the Magpies are desperate to sign a centre-back – particularly a high calibre one given the names linked.
Their persistence might pay off, and it’s reportedly impressing Carlos’ agency. They’re going to have to pay a big fee to prize him away from Sevilla, but he could be well worth it.
