Gini Wijnaldum is reportedly in danger of missing out on selection for Paris Saint-Germain’s updated Champions League squad.

According to Le Parisien (via GFFN), the Netherlands international faces being omitted by Mauricio Pochettino.

The giants need to exclude a senior player as their squad is too large.

The club had to submit their final list last night, and it needed to include eight players trained at the club or in France, and a maximum of 17 players considered ‘foreign’. Currently, PSG have 18.

GFFN offer a few names in danger of not making the cut.

Full-back Juan Bernat, who didn’t make the group stage squad after a knee injury, could miss out.

And Ander Herrera, Julian Draxler and Wijnaldum could all be in danger.

Wijnaldum, of course, was linked with a move to Newcastle last month. The Telegraph reported at the start of January that the Magpies could make a move for the midfielder.

In the end nothing materialised. Wijnaldum was open to making a loan move to the Premier League (Sky Sports), but he apparently didn’t want to rejoin Newcastle to partake in a relegation battle.

Wijnaldum would stay at PSG, and it looks as though his stint there could be about to get tougher.

Missing out on the club’s knockout stage squad would be a real kick in the teeth for Wijnaldum.

He’s a player who has had great success in the competition in the past, helping Liverpool to glory in the 2019/20 season.

One wonders if he may have some regrets about not pushing to go back to Newcastle if he hasn’t made that squad.

Ultimately, Wijnaldum may make PSG’s final squad.

But the fact he is even in the conversation as a player who could potentially miss out says it all.

It just doesn’t seem like the move to the Parc des Princes is working out for him.

He reportedly didn’t want to make a move back to Newcastle. But he would have been playing week in, week out at St. James’ Park.

If he actually does miss out on PSG’s 25-man squad, it’ll be hugely embarrassing for him. And he may well wish he had been more open to a move to Newcastle.
