Report: Federico Fernandez set to be released by Elche after Newcastle exit

When Federico Fernandez left Newcastle United on September 1st 2022, it sounded like the chance for a fresh start for the defender.

He joined La Liga side Elche, agreeing a one-year deal with the Spanish side. He would add experience to their defence, no doubt leaning on some wonderful experiences with the Magpies.

However, Fernandez’s move to Elche is turning out to be a disaster. The 33-year-old only signed a contract until the summer of 2023, but he might not even last that long.

That is because a report from Spain claims that his new club are already looking to terminate his contract.

Elche planning to release Federico Fernandez already

According to Estadio Deportivo, Elche are now looking to get rid of Fernandez and Javier Pastore.

They claim that the Spanish club have informed Fernandez of their decision, as they look to release a player who has only featured once since joining.

That was a 2-1 defeat to Rayo Vallecano, where Fernandez endured a debut to forget.

Since then there has been a change of manager at Elche, while the Argentinian centre-back has struggled with injury.

The Alicante based side are having a season to forget, and are currently bottom of La Liga. That isn’t massively surprising considering they lost to Newcastle’s Under-21s during pre-season.

However, their season is going even worse than anticipated, with no wins from their opening 14 games. They are already eight points adrift of safety, and will fear that they are destined for relegation.

Fernandez has not had a good 2022. He barely featured under Eddie Howe at Newcastle, before eventually getting the move away that he needed for the sake of his career.

Now that move is proving to be a disaster, with Fernandez seemingly on the bring of becoming a free agent.

Hopefully he can quickly find himself a new club. Fernandez is an excellent defender and a real professional. He was wonderful for Newcastle, and it is a shame that his move away is going to end prematurely.
