In a shock turn of events, Eddie Howe now appears to be the frontrunner for the Newcastle job.

The shortlist was down to two on Tuesday, with Howe and Unai Emery vying for the position of Toon boss.

However, it was the latter who the Newcastle hierarchy wanted. Alas, that won’t be happening.

Emery has now confirmed that he will be staying at Villarreal, leaving egg on the face of Amanda Staveley and co.

They will now need to look elsewhere, despite hoping to have Emery on the touchline against Brighton on Saturday.

According to the Northern Echo, the Magpies are now turning their attention to former Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe.

But how does the 43-year-old feel about the possibility of moving to St James’ Park?

That’s despite the fact he clearly isn’t the new Toon owners’ first choice. There was so much noise about Emery joining Newcastle yesterday that his appointment felt inevitable.

Now the Spaniard is out of the race, and the consortium are scrambling to find an alternative.

It’s not really a good look for the new owners, who will now need to approach a man who knows he’s not the one they want.

But that seemingly doesn’t matter to Howe, who is keen to manage Newcastle United.

Is he the man to guide us to safety? Only time will tell. And even still, there could be another twist in the tale.
