The Daily Express have reported that Newcastle United target and Atalanta striker Duvan Zapata wants to join the club. The Magpies are looking to bring in the Colombian forward on a loan deal with a view to making it permanent in the summer of 2022.

Earlier in the window, the Toon Army placed a bid of around £25 million (according to The Daily Record) for the 30-year-old. However, his current side Atalanta value him at around £10 million more.

Since arriving in Serie A back in 2013, Zapata has been one of the most consistent strikers in the league. The forward is constantly one of the top scorers in Italy’s top flight.

Adding Zapata would certainly provide an extra boost upfront

With the newly signed Chris Wood and Dwight Gayle being the only available fit strikers for the club, Zapata would provide another outlet upfront.

As previously mentioned, the Atalanta forward has a very strong goal return for the Italian side. In addition, he has a rare mix of speed, strength, height and finishing. Making him like an overpowered FIFA player come to life.

With Zapata proving himself in Serie A, you feel a move to the Premier League is the next logical step up. Some fans will be excited to see the Colombian arrive at Newcastle. As the Magpies fight for survival they’ll need all the goals they can get, considering his record, Zapata could be the man to do so.

Is it too much money for a player that’s not getting any younger? Or is age just a number?

One of the few potential risks is should the Toon Army land Zapata, is the fee too much for a 30-year-old? With there being younger strikers in Europe, you could arguably get better value for money. Having said that there’s the old saying age is just a number.

Scoring goals at the top level doesn’t always dry up for ageing strikers. Look at Jamie Vardy for the last few seasons, the majority of his goals have come aged 30 and over.

As long as he would score and help keep Newcastle up in the process, Zapata would be adored on Tyneside. Some fans would want to see the fee made if a successful loan spell occurred this month. The Colombian has an impressive goal record, could he do it in the Premier League?
