Elliot Anderson has the potential to be a future star for Newcastle United.

The teenager has made two first-team appearances for the Magpies, having always been on the fringes since Steve Bruce was manager.

Allan Saint-Maximin is a big fan, while Callum Wilson has described him as ‘unbelievable‘. Supporters have been keen to see the youngster get a proper chance in the Premier League, but that is yet to happen.

Anderson finally got some proper experience in senior football last season, heading out on loan to League Two side Bristol Rovers.

The 19-year-old was exceptional in the fourth tier, scoring eight goals and providing five assists. He even scored the goal that sent Joey Barton’s side up to League One.

Anderson was magical in a Bristol Rovers shirt, and will definitely play at a higher level next season. But where that is remains to be seen.

Dan Ashworth will have a big say in Elliot Anderson’s Newcastle future

Newcastle have re-signed Matt Targett this summer, but the Magpies’ most important deal could be the arrival of Sporting Director Dan Ashworth.

The 51-year-old is going to play a key role behind the scenes at St James’ Park, ensuring every department is pulling in the right direction.

And the Athletic claim that Ashworth will take a keen interest in what happens with Anderson and his next move.

The arrival of Ashworth could massively help his development. He hasn’t just arrived at SJP to buy and sell players – he will also aid the progress of our academy stars.

During his time at Brighton, multiple players came through the Seagulls’ academy. One example is goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, who has been linked with a move to Newcastle. Brighton needed a keeper who was good with his feet, and were able to dip into their academy rather than splash out on a new signing.

That is exactly what Newcastle want to be able to do as well. Anderson is the most likely right now to eventually become a first-team star for the Magpies.

But he needs to get minutes elsewhere. Ashworth will work with Shola Ameobi to decide where he goes next, whether that’s to the Championship or League One.

It’s a big decision, but Ashworth can be trusted to make the right one given his track record and reputation.
