Todd Cantwell could reportedly become Newcastle United’s second January signing.

The Magpies added Kieran Trippier to their squad last week, making him the first arrival since the takeover. He cost £12million from Atletico Madrid, and more arrivals are expected this month.

In recent days, talk of a move for Cantwell has ramped up, with Norwich seemingly keen to let the midfielder go.

The Telegraph stated last week that Newcastle had made an enquiry for the 23-year-old, who could reportedly cost around £15million.

Speculation increased over the weekend, with Cantwell not featuring in Norwich’s FA Cup squad that beat Charlton Athletic.

So could a move to St James’ Park be on the horizon?

In an in-depth look at Newcastle’s transfer strategy, the Telegraph’s Jason Burt appears to have hinted at the Magpies’ second signing.

In the piece, he wrote: “It appears Cantwell may soon be the second signing, following the arrival of Kieran Trippier, with Newcastle also desperate to add at least one centre-half and a striker to their squad before the crucial home game against Watford on Saturday.”

If that’s true, then Newcastle appear to be moving quickly behind the scenes.

And if Cantwell does arrive soon, it proves how efficiently the new owners can get business done when you have a willing seller.

While Norwich are a relegation rival, they’re keen to move Cantwell on. It does strengthen one of their rivals, but they’re selling a player they don’t use and it gives them cash to reinvest themselves.

This could be a deal that suits all parties. Cantwell is an interesting target, and he could be a wonderfully astute signing if he recaptures his form the from the 2019/20 Premier League campaign. Cantwell scored six league goals, as Norwich failed to survive in the top flight.

The jury will be out if this deal happens, but he could at least become a fresh face in a squad that has become stale.
