Former Newcastle United full-back Achraf Lazaar is reportedly closing in on a move to Championship side Watford.

The Morocco international has just left St. James’ Park following a mutual termination of his contract.

And it seems he hasn’t had to wait long for a new opportunity, with the Hornets poised to snap him up according to the Watford Observer.

Left-back has been something of a problem position at Vicarage Road this season, with Adam Masina, Ken Sema and Kiko Femenia having all picked up knocks recently.

Head coach Xisco Munoz has been forced to deploy Jermey Ngakia at left-back to cover, with Marc Navarro operating at right-back.

The Observer say Lazaar will be signed on a short-term deal until the end of the season, where a decision will then be taken about a possible extension.

Lazaar does have a small amount of Championship experience.

Of his 10 first-team appearances for Newcastle, four came in the English second tier in 2016/17, all as a substitute. He then made four on loan at Sheffield Wednesday in 2018/19.

Lazaar will hopefully impress

One can’t help but feel like Lazaar wasted a good chunk of his career at Newcastle.

He was left out of so many squads over the years and shipped out to various clubs on loan.

10 appearances for the Newcastle first-team since 2016 must have been a real disappointment for the player.

Hopefully he can make some kind of mark for Watford and show that he perhaps didn’t warrant such little game time at St. James’ Park.
