Rangers boss Steven Gerrard is reportedly intrigued by the Newcastle job following Thursday’s takeover.
That’s according to the Daily Mail, who state this could be Gerrard’s final season at Ibrox.
The Newcastle job isn’t currently available, but it is widely expected that Steve Bruce won’t be Toon boss for much longer.
Bruce told the Telegraph that while he would like to stay on, he wouldn’t be bitter if the new owners wanted to go in a different direction. If I was due an £8million pay out, I wouldn’t be bitter either…
But would Gerrard be a good replacement?
The Liverpool legend has enjoyed a decent start to management, putting an end to Celtic’s Scottish Premiership dominance. Gerrard has built a strong team at Rangers, and they try their best to play attractive, possession-based football.
One of the challenges with appointing Gerrard would be luring him away from Ibrox. However, some Gers fans are very worried that their manager would be tempted by a move to St James’ Park – especially with their newfound wealth.
The Daily Mail report that Newcastle ideally want someone with Premier League experience, which would work against Gerrard.
However, he is a bright young manager who clearly has a lot of potential. Gerrard is adored at Ibrox, and fans north of the border would be gutted to see him go.
Of course, it is purely speculation right now. Bruce is still Newcastle manager, while there have been no reports stating that the Magpies want Gerrard.
