According to the Times, Rafa Benitez could make a move to bring Newcastle United midfielder Sean Longstaff to Everton.
The Spaniard gave Longstaff his big break at Newcastle, handing him his debut in December 2018.
The midfielder played some great football under Benitez, enjoying a sensational run in the Newcastle starting XI. However, injury ended his debut season early.
When Longstaff returned, Benitez had gone. And sadly for the Geordie lad, his performances have never been quite the same.
Under Steve Bruce he has been in and out of the side, unable to recapture the form he showed during his first venture into Premier League football.
He was so good that Manchester United reportedly wanted him, with Newcastle putting a £50million price tag on his head.
Unsurprisingly, the Red Devils didn’t entertain it.
Two years on, and Longstaff is still with the Magpies, but nowhere near the £50million player he was in 2019.
Interest from other clubs has disappeared…until now.
The Times’ claim that Everton could move for Longstaff is certainly interesting following Benitez’s appointment.
Rafa clearly saw something in Longstaff, and feels he can get it out of him again at Goodison Park.
And a move would surely appeal for Longstaff too, as he’s never looked quite as good since Benitez left.
A swap deal with Tom Davies was recently mooted by the Chronicle, but that has been played down.
But following a fresh claim that Benitez wants Longstaff, Everton fans have made their thoughts clear – they aren’t interested in the 23-year-old moving to Merseyside.
