According to the Telegraph, Rafa Benitez and Mike Ashley are meeting today to discuss the manager’s future.

As we all know, Benitez’s contract expires this summer and fans are desperate for the Spaniard to stay at the club. The pressure is on Ashley to get a deal done like never before.

But no matter what happens, the Magpies are already playing catch up with most of their Premier League competition.

Benitez contract needs to be resolved ASAP

On the same day that Benitez and Ashley are meeting, the transfer window has opened.

Teams up and down the country will be looking at who to sign to help them achieve their ambitions next season. We’ve already had Wilfried Zaha say he wants to leave Crystal Palace.

But for Newcastle, they’re still twiddling their fingers, waiting to find out if they’ll have Benitez calling the shots once again.

There’s no point in sorting out transfers until the manager’s future is resolved. The longer the talks ramble on, the more time we lose trying to secure top targets ahead of next season.

It’s just typical Newcastle. We’ve been safe for a while now, yet the owner and manager are only just meeting to discuss a contract.

Why change the habit of a lifetime and make things simple, eh?
