According to West London Sport, Queens Park Rangers have Newcastle United’s Freddie Woodman on their radar as a short-term goalkeeping option.

QPR’s first-choice keeper Seny Dieng is currently away at the African Cup of Nations and second choice Jordan Archer sustained an injury in the FA Cup against Rotherham.

Rangers are currently in the Championship playoffs, sitting in 5th place with a game in hand. Their only available option between the sticks would be Joe Walsh, who is just 19.

Aside from Newcastle’s Woodman, The Hoops are looking at Ben Hamer, David Marshall and Keiren Westwood as possible options.

A loan move away could give Woodman some needed game time

Woodman has made 4 appearances in the Premier League this season. This was due to a keeper crisis early on in the campaign. Since then he’s not been able to acquire much game time, and a loan move to the Championship would greatly benefit him.

Last season Woodman had a strong outing at Swansea City in the Championship. He was one of the best performing keepers that season and played in the final of the play-offs, the Swans were defeated by Brentford.

His appearances for Newcastle were not his finest and was at fault for two of Ronaldo’s goals when they faced Man Utd at Old Trafford. So perhaps Woodman would benefit from a loan move, it would give him consistent game time and it’s a league he’s performed in well previously.

QPR assessing other options might be better for both parties

It seems as if QPR’s pursuit of a keeper is very short term. Woodman may only get to play a few games if Dieng returns from the African Cup of Nations fairly quickly. So, rotting away on the bench for the second half of the season wouldn’t be ideal.

With QPR looking at keepers, the out of favour David Marshall might be the best choice. He’s out of the picture at Derby and has experience of playing in the Championship. Additionally, he’d be a solid third or second choice option when Dieng returns.

For Woodman, 24, a loan move would be great for him. But, he should wait and see if other clubs in the Championship are interested. If he were to go to QPR it may end up with him on the bench most of the time.
