Jamie O’Hara believes Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe could be the next England manager.

Pundit Jamie O’Hara has predicted that Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe will be the man chosen by The FA to take over from Gareth Southgate when he vacates the England hot seat.

Howe certainly has the kind of reputation and pedigree typically required to be seriously considered for the role of England manager.

Howe earned his stripes whilst in charge of Bournemouth, leading the south coast club up from League Two to the Premier League across two stints in the Vitality Stadium dugout. His remarkable work whilst at the helm for the Cherries earned him the LMA League Manager of the Decade award in 2015.

He has impressed yet further since taking on the top job at St James’ Park. Howe has guided the club back into the Champions League and has built a squad capable of seriously challenging for silverware.

However, the Magpies have endured a difficult start to the new Premier League season. Newcastle have lost three of their opening four matches of the campaign.

Increased success leads to increased expectations and higher standards being demanded. As popular as Howe is on Tyneside, if results don’t improve soon then before long he may well find his position under threat.

O’Hara backs Howe for England job

Former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder O’Hara certainly believes that Howe struggling at Newcastle could lead to him taking on the England job.

Discussing who might take over from Southgate as England boss on TalkSport, he said, “I think it’s going to be Eddie Howe…I think he will leave [Newcastle] because I think the results are going to go a little bit dodgy…I don’t know if he’s going to get sacked, but I think he might just have a way out…of a situation which is on the edge.”

“I think Newcastle might be on the brink of maybe thinking about replacing him with someone big, and I think the opportunity to go to England is going to come up, and I think he’ll take it.”

Whether or not Newcastle have any plans in place to replace Howe remains to be seen. However, the England job would be very difficult for Howe to refuse were it to be offered. That being said, if things are going well for him at Newcastle when Southgate leaves his post, Howe may wish to see through his chance to win major domestic trophies with a club on the rise.
