Pundit claims Newcastle player is brilliant in three different positions

Alexander Isak is already a superstar for Newcastle United, and former Chelsea player Pat Nevin believes he is top class in multiple positions.

Newcastle brought Isak in to initially play up front, and that is where he has played the majority of his football. However, we have seen Eddie Howe use him in a variety of different positions.

In the Carabao Cup final he operated as a number 10 just behind Callum Wilson, while on Sunday he played on the left during the 2-0 defeat to Arsenal.

The 23-year-old is such a unique player. He blends speed, vision, dribbling ability and athleticism with the knack of scoring goals, which has led to him being likened to Premier League legend Thierry Henry.

Those comparisons are incredibly kind, and a testament to how well Isak has done since arriving at St James’ Park.

£63million looked like a lot of money at the time, but he appears to be worth every penny now. In fact, Nevin believes that the versatile forward is turning out to be a bargain.

Speaking on the Off The Ball YouTube channel, Nevin has explained in detail why Isak is such a special player.

“Looking at [Alexander] Isak, yes he could be the most brilliant winger apart from the boy at Real Madrid [Vinicius Jr] who’s not bad,” he said.

“He could be among the best in the business just now, but he’s not just a dribbler, that’s the problem, he’s everything else as well.

“Looking at him, I’m thinking, are you a centre-forward? You look as though you’re easily good enough to be a Premier League centre-forward. Stick him out wide, stick him as a ten, stick him anywhere on that pitch and you’re in unbelievable danger wherever you are.

“He’s got vision to spare, his touch is absolutely incredible and then he goes and sticks in the dribbling skills on top of that. He is astonishing.

“He’s a bargain already. You look at all the players who have been bought just now, I think the timing of his career, where he is just now, the thought that he will actually get quite a lot better.

“His dribbling’s my favourite part, but I can’t ignore the fact he’s got everything else as well.”

His best position is through the middle

We have seen Isak do brilliant things in multiple positions. That incredible run that led to Jacob Murphy’s goal against Everton was simply breathtaking, and came from him playing on the left of attack.

Isak has got the lot, but there is no denying that his best position is through the middle. That is where he is at his most dangerous, and where he has had the most joy in a Newcastle shirt.

After a slow start to his Toon career due to injury, Isak is really starting to turn heads. He is more than just a goalscorer, although he is not bad at putting the ball in the net, as his 10 goals prove.

Whether or not he is a bargain is up for debate. Can a club record signing of more than £60million ever be classed as a ‘bargain’? Not for me, but he is certainly proving to be a worthwhile investment.

Nevin has been blown away, and he is not the only one.
