‘Proud’ Newcastle 26-year-old believes he can still get even better

There have been plenty of resurgences under Eddie Howe at Newcastle United, but non greater than Joelinton’s.

The Brazilian can almost be considered the poster boy for Howe‘s reign on Tyneside. He has been transformed, with Joelinton now a key player at Newcastle.

That never looked like it was going to be possible when he joined the club. He was asked to play up front on his own with the heavy number nine on his back, and it certainly weighed him down.

His first couple of years at St James’ Park were really difficult, but now Joelinton is reborn. He is a midfield powerhouse who burst into life in his new role last season, and has been even better in this campaign. You could argue he has been our player of the season.

The 26-year-old plays with a confidence that we have never seen before from him, and his efforts are on the brink of guiding Newcastle to the Champions League.

It has been a special season from Joelinton – but he actually believes he can get even better.

Joelinton states how he can play even better for Newcastle

The £40million man spoke to NUFC TV ahead of the game against Brighton, and was asked how happy he has been with his performances this season.

“I’m proud of myself,” he said.

“A lot of work has been done. There are a lot of things I have to improve. I wish I had more goals and assists.

“But I’m happy with the performance this year. Happy to be free of injuries and be available for as many games as I could.”

Best season ever for Joelinton

While he might want to score more goals and get more assists, this is actually Joelinton’s best season ever in terms of goal contributions.

He has scored eight times in all competitions this season, which is more than he ever managed as a striker. On top of that, he has also got three assists.

It is the first time ever that he has hit double figures for goal contributions in a Newcastle shirt, and he has shown real improvement in front of goal.

Joelinton looks more composed when faced with a chance, as we saw against Tottenham when he controlled a long pass with ease before dancing past the desperate Hugo Lloris.

It is amazing what confidence can do to a player, but Joelinton still believes that there is more to come. He wants more goals, he wants more assists.

He is not resting on his laurels, and still believes he can get even better. That is great news for Howe, and it is great news for Newcastle fans, who still can’t believe he only cost £40million.
