‘Promising’ Newcastle youngster scores on debut for loan club, he’s been trusted with penalties

Newcastle United’s recent signing Yankuba Minteh is off the mark already for Feyenoord after an impressive debut in a pre-season friendly for the club he’ll play for next season while on loan.

After sealing his £6million move to Newcastle from Odense in Denmark, Yankuba Minteh was immediately loaned to Eredivisie side Feyenoord for the season in order to accelerate his development.

The 18-year-old Gambian forward was given 45 minutes to show what he could do today in a pre-season friendly with PEC Zwolle which saw Feyenoord emerge as 3-1 winners in the game which was streamed live on YouTube, allowing Newcastle fans to get a good look at their future marksman.

Minteh calmly slotted home his penalty for Feyenoord on his debut

The Feyenoord’s third goal came from the on-loan Newcastle forward from the penalty spot after manager Arne Slot was heard shouting at Minteh to take the spot-kick on the live stream.

It turned out to be a good decision as the penalty was calmly despatched by the youngster who was already having a superb impact playing down the right wing.

Besides his calm finish from 12 yards, Minteh looked comfortable in possession and would often beat his man down the flank. He clearly has an eye for a pass too, and although not everything he tried came off the potential is there for all to see.

Minteh is looking like a good one for the future

Dan Ashworth described Minteh as ‘promising‘ when he arrived from Odense and it’s easy to see why now. Granted it’s just 45 minutes of a pre-season friendly against lesser opposition, but it’s a good start, and bagging a goal on his debut will do his confidence the world of good.

Hopefully Arne Slot will have been pleased with what he saw and will be willing to give Minteh plenty of opportunities next seasonat Feyenoord so Newcastle don’t end up with another situation like we had with Garang Kuol.

At just 18, it may be another season after next before Minteh starts to break his way into the Newcastle first-team, but early signs suggest that he will be worth the wait.
