The Eintracht Frankfurt man – who cost the Bundesliga side £4.5 million according to the Daily Mail – spent time on loan at St James’ Park last season before a gruesome injury cut his stint on Tyneside short.
However, he is clearly still invested in the Magpies, having decided to tune into the game last night.
After being stretched off against Chelsea last season with a horrendous knee injury, Willems’ chance of a permanent move to St James’ Park were ended.
However, as Goal report, the Netherlands international told fans on a Twitter chat that it was his desire to come back and play for Newcastle on a permanent basis.
Ultimately, Steve Bruce decided to spend £15 million of his budget on 22-year-old Jamal Lewis.
Willems hasn’t made an appearance yet this season, but it’s hard to forget how good he was during his time at Newcastle last season.
The 26-year-old scored two goals and assisted two more in 19 Premier League appearances, including strikes against Liverpool and Manchester City – one of his assists came in a win over Manchester United, emphasising that he’s a man for the big occasion.
It remains to be seen if Willems ever returns to Newcastle, although the Magpies clearly still hold a place in his heart.
