Peter Kenyon trying to buy Everton after failed Newcastle takeover

After his Newcastle takeover attempts failed, Peter Kenyon is once again trying to buy a Premier League club.

The former Manchester United and Chelsea chief executive is reportedly part of a bid to buy Everton from Farhad Moshiri.

According to Telegraph, Kenyon is fronting a consortium to buy the Toffees, alongside US businessmen Maciek Kaminski and John Thornton. The report states that talks are at a very early stage.

The news will interest Everton fans, who endured a miserable 2021/22 campaign that nearly ended in relegation. They’re also in a precarious financial position after years of poor spending in the transfer market.

It will also intrigue Newcastle supporters, who could be supporting a club owned by Kenyon had things gone differently back in the day.

Peter Kenyon’s multiple failed takeover attempts of Newcastle

While the word ‘takeover’ delights Toon fans now after what happened last year, it was once met with dread and frustration.

Before PIF bought the club last year, supporters endured years of takeover speculation that ultimately led to disappointment.

After Amanda Staveley’s first attempt to buy Newcastle failed in 2018, Kenyon emerged on the scene. Sky Sports reported in December 2018 that he was in the running to buy the club from Mike Ashley.

However, his bid collapsed in early 2019.

But he would return later in the year – this time with a different consortium and a flashy brochure that detailed how they would transform the club.

In September 2019, Kenyon fronted a £300million bid for the Magpies, alongside the GACP Sports group.

Like so many other attempts, it failed. Instead, Newcastle had to wait until October 2021 for Ashley to sell the club.

Kenyon wasn’t involved, and now he’s launching a fresh bid to own a Premier League side.

Everton asking price shows what a bargain Newcastle were

According to the Telegraph, Moshiri values Everton at more than £500million. That’s a lot more than what Newcastle cost last year.

It shows what a bargain (in relative terms) the Toon owners got. The consortium paid £305million for the Magpies, with PIF owning 80% of the club.

That’s why Newcastle were so appealing. They were cheaper than other clubs, and the potential is there for all to see. It’s been a sleeping giant for far too long, but it is very much awake now.

The fans are reinvested and the club is going in the right direction.

Would things have been the same if Kenyon had bought Newcastle? We’ll never know, but we might get an idea if he’s able to complete a takeover of Everton. It’s certainly one to watch in the coming months.
